Disaster Recovery Restarts Computer

I tried to preform a Disaster Recovery on my laptop and received a message that the program must restart the computer to have exclusive access to the drive. I did that and the computer reset to a blank screen with some dots running across the top of the screen. Otherwise, nothing else indicates activity or progress.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Disaster Recovery Restarts Computer

We have seen this issue on rare occasions, particularly with newer computers with newer chipsets and with Win7 x64or Win2k8 x64.

We believe we have resolved this issue with the latest beta of the software that we just released. Details on this is located at this post:

If you do try the beta please give us feedback as to confirm it did or did not resolve the issue please.

Re: Disaster Recovery Restarts Computer

Thanks for the link. I have a Dell Lattitude D830, running Win 7 64 bit. I am having trouble with the backup. I get a VSS error just prior to the message to restart the computer. I restart it and get into a utility to continue the backup process, but I cannot seem to get past the point of saving the file. I get a dialog box with several options, for creating a new folder, deleting a folder, and saving files. But, I can't seem to find a combimation of choices that will allow me to move forward, If I click on the save button the screen flashed and just comes back.

Any advice on how to move forward? Also, how do I resolve going forward the Nova Backup version issues this will generate. I received Nova Backup from my Buffalo Link Station, which I think is v11.14.

Thanks,

Jim

I am running an HP G62 on Windows 7 Professional. NovaBackup, too, told me that it couldn't create a DR backup without full access to the system (apparently NovaBackup believes that some application is running in the background preventing exclusive access to the OS.) I then let NovaBackup have the access it required, making my machine boot to the screen described in the posting above. I actually did get NovaBackup to create a DR backup after rebooting, but only by going through several steps to let Windows analyze what application was running and then stop it. Upon doing the system analysis it appeared that there was no application running, but I told Windows to stop it anyway, then the backup started running. Strange.

I am still rebooting into the recovery boot screen every time. I tried restoring the system to an earlier date, but that did nothing at all to stop the reboot problem.

Re: Disaster Recovery Restarts Computer

Sorry to post just after my last post. I am downloading the NovaBackup 12 beta to see how it works. Will this installation correct my boot problem? Unlike the original poster, I get the Windows Boot Recovery screen after my row of dots displays. the menu items give me the opportunity to boot from the normal Windows 7 instance or go to the recovery instance. this is sort of like the Win XP OS question that it asked if you wanted to boot from XP or some other instance and then counted down a number of seconds that you had previously set. Used to be able to set that time to 0 to keep that screen from showing up.

Re: Disaster Recovery Restarts Computer

I have had the same problem with my Sony Vaio running Win 7(x64). When I contacted support I was told that this was a known issue which would be corrected in an update in October, but it does not now appear that that is going to happen.I tried downloading the Nova 12 Beta and discovered that to use it you have to buy the product again. The 11.1 version I bought in September is completely useless because I bought it to do system image backups, but this feature does not work on my system. In order to get a version which does work it now appears that I have to pay another 50 $, but I think that I will just accept the original 50 $ loss and try another company. The info on the Novastor website indicates, under system requirements, that their product is compatible with Win 7 (x64) but under supported media it indicates that it isn't which is confusing and misleading. My mistake for not trying out the product before I bought it.

Hrmmm. I installed the 12 beta version over my 11 version and inserted my 11 key code (I have an evergreen license). The beta version took the 11 key code as valid. So far the beta works great. The issue of not starting a DR backup unless it has exclusive access to the system is fixed.

However, I had to download and use EasyBCD ver 2.0 in order to fix the master boot record and clean up the mess that NovaBackup made when it tried to gain exclusive access with its boot-time backup. Easy fix, but try to find out information about Win 7. The problem I was having is that HP would insert its own system diagnostic program into the boot sequence so I never did see Windows 7 Recovery Console.

Re: Disaster Recovery Restarts Computer

What good does it do to have a demo version, even if I could get it to run ? The fact remains that when a stable version is released who knows how many months or years down the road Novastor will charge full price for it to users who currently have version 11. The info on the Novastor website indicated that the product was compatible with Windows 7. I was dumb enough to believe that this info was honest and I got burned and cannot now get a refund. Novastor is just another rip-off company as clearly proven by the fact that their website claims that their product is compatible with Win 7 when it isn't.
