The NovaNet-WEB Online Backup Server
At the core of any NovaNet-WEB backup solution is NovaNet-WEB Server. Running as a service on Windows 2000 or Windows 2003, the NovaNet-WEB Server can automatically handle the backup and restore requests for thousands of users. Monitor server performance in real time, control user configurations, update client software and, in the event of any errors or warnings, immediately send alert messages to the administrator.
User Configuration
A simple configuration interface allows the administrator to quickly add, remove or modify users. Other features include the ability to specify trial accounts, set the number of computers the account may have backed up using it, how long a data restoration / retention window to use for the account, and more.
NovaNet-WEB Remote Manager is a web-based Plug-in that allows management of all NovaNet-WEB Backup Servers from any central location. As an extension to NovaNet-WEB Backup Server Configuration Manager, you can remotely manage and communicate with more than one backup server to create centralized management from anywhere in the world. Configure user access, display server status, search for account, review server logs and more.
Redundant File Elimination - Recover from Image™
Recover from Image utilizes existing PC procurement procedures by offering a disaster recovery capability utilizing standard installations for every desktop. Since these programs are readily available, NovaNet-WEB can be configured to only backup files that are unique to each user. NovaNet-WEB's new Redundant File feature automatically exclude the standard files from the backup set which significantly reduce the total storage space required on the server and increase the speed of the backup for each user. If a failure should occur, the standard image is combined with all of the unique files that have been backed up to quickly rebuild the user's entire computing environment. Redundant file lists can be created, managed and shared among users.
Tamper Proof Blocking
Administrators can "lock down" certain functions on each NovaNet-WEB client including settings that control the level of usage each client is offered, modifying backup schedules or changing file selections.
Performance Monitor Integration
The NovaNet-WEB Server exposes more than 20 data points that can be viewed in real time or tracked over a period of time. System administrators can get detailed, up-to-the-minute performance information to help monitor and manage their growing end user backup solution.
Windows 2000/2003 Service
Because NovaNet-WEB Server Windows runs as a 2000/2003 as a service, it automatically services all backup and restore requests for each user. Since it is a multi-threading application it can easily handle multiple simultaneous users without performance degradation.
Fast Performance
NovaNet-WEB includes several performance enhancements making practical to support over 10,000 users on a single server. The enhancements include:
- Use of Component Object Model (COM) for structured file storage. This enables the client
and server to process each user request over 30 times faster.
- Faster encryption performance using the Blowfish algorithm. (448-bit key Blowfish is
faster and more secure than 40-bit DES encryption.)
- Streamlined protocol facilitates fast authentication and minimizes overhead. Often
cuts backup times by greater than 50%.
- Multi-threaded processes on the client and server make efficient use of CPU time and
power.
Automatic Online Upgrades
Seamless upgrades of client software are available when patches are placed on the server. All update patches are created with the same FastBIT technology to reduce transfer time.
User Data Retention Policies
Server administrators can configure restorable windows for each user. If the restorable window is set to 1 month, only the data backed up within the past 1 month is available for restoration.
Master Key Option
A Master Key on the server allows corporate administrators to recover critical corporate information in the event of an employee termination or dispute. The master key can be set and applied for individual users. By default the master key is disabled on the server. If the users do not want their data to be accessible by the administrator, a setting on the client software can prevent the administrator from using the master on their account.
Server Usage Reporting
Service providers now have access to a more flexible usage-based licensing rather than user license-based licensing. The Backup Server now has the ability to track how many accounts actually have data contained in them. A file containing the important usage information can be created with a single button click, and sent to NovaStor for processing. There are no published usage-based licensing programs available at this time.

Error Notification
If errors occur, administrators can be alerted via e-mail, or messages can be written to the 2000/2003 Event Log or send Windows 2000/2003 Alerts. The administrator can get notified of any of the following types of errors:
- Program Exceptions
- 2000/2003 System Errors
- Backup/Restore Errors
Please Note - SQL Requirements
In order to install or upgrade your backup server to v6.8 of NovaNet-WEB, you MUST already have MSDE/SQL 2000/SQL 2005 installed on an available network or local system. Microsoft SQL 2005 Express is free and available here.
(If you are using SQL 2005 Express, you must enter .\SQLEXPRESS as the server name when installing the NovaNet-WEB Backup Server software)

This server-based plug-in allows service providers to create a simple customer sign-up form from a link on the web site. Customer evaluation accounts are automatically added to the backup server and their contact and billing information is captured and stored in any specified database.
