  1. InstantRecovery End-of-Life Notice
    NovaStor Corporation is announcing the end of life for the Instant Recovery product line effective December 1, 2004. As of this date we will no longer sell this product. More info.

  2. What is InstantRecovery?
    InstantRecovery is a disaster recovery backup for ANY "Intel-type" computer (Intel Pentium, AMD Athlon, etc.). It quickly, easily and inexpensively backs up and recovers hard disks to and from CD-R/RW, tape drives, removable drives and secondary hard drives. It gets your computer back up and running quickly when your hard drive fails or some catastrophic failure occurs. Because it is Operating System independent, it doesn't matter if you are using Windows, Linux, Unix, etc. on your PC.

  3. How long does it take?
    That depends on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your CD recorder. With compression turned on and a 4x recording speed, it will take about 20 minutes for each Gigabyte of hard drive space.

  4. Do I have to restore everything in an InstantRecovery backup?
    You may restore an entire backup or select individual partitions to restore. For example, if you backed up an entire hard disk consisting of a C:, D: and E: drive but which only to recover the C: partition, you may do so.

  5. Can I backup a single partition?
    Yes. You may backup one or more (or all) partitions.

  6. Can I backup and restore individual files?
    No, InstantRecovery is designed to back up an entire partition or hard disk volume. InstantRecovery does not do incremental or differential file backup.

  7. What if I want to restore to a different disk than the one I backed up?
    Yes, you may restore an InstantRecovery image to other disks. Run InstantRecovery and the imaging Wizard will step you through the proper procedure.

  8. My hard disk is several gigabytes, but CD-R/W media is only 650 MB. How can I fit all my data on a CD-R/W disc?
    InstantRecovery automatically spans data across multiple CD-R/W discs if it won’t fit on a single disc. Furthermore, InstantRecovery includes the option of data compression, requiring less space than the original. Note: The amount of compression depends on the original data and assumes 2x compression for a typical case.

  9. After I have backed up my system to CD-R, do I need to install the software to restore my system or to restore individual files?
    InstantRecovery can create either a bootable floppy disk or a bootable CD that will allow you to restore your entire system from scratch.

  10. Does it support any file systems other than FAT 16/32 or NTFS?
    InstantRecovery can back up any physically present hard disk on a user's system, regardless of the file system.

  11. What Operating Systems does it support?
    IR supports, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Linux, Free BSD and all Unixes that run on an Intel/AMD type platform.

  12. What happens if I lose my boot disks and need to perform a recovery?
    If you can access any computer, yours or someone else's, to create new boot disks, you will be able to use new boot disks to start InstantRecovery to recover your system. In other words, the same boot disks used while backing up your system are not critical to data recovery.

  13. Is InstantRecovery 4.0 capable of backing up to a server without a DHCP Server if I'm on a Domain?
    No. However you must assign a static or dynamic IP address.

  14. Is there a way to set an IP address in InstantRecovery 4.0 if my network does not use a DHCP Server?
    Yes. You must assign a static or a dynamic IP address.

    Steps:

    • Boot into InstantRecovery
    • Press Alt - F2
    • This will drop you to command prompt - Type in: ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.x.xxx (Where xxx.xxx.x.xxx is an available address on your network)
    • Press Alt - F1 to return to InstantRecovery

    Using the above procedure, the computer that has InstantRecovery on it is now seen on the network and will function with the Backup and Restore procedures.
